Some 56,200 under-19s started apprenticeships between August 2021 and January this year, statistics from the Department for Education show, compared with 38,800 in the same time period a year previously.

Figures for August 2020 to January 2021 showed the lowest take-up of apprenticeships for under-19s since 2018.

Data for 19- to 24-year-olds shows that between August 2021 and January this year, 63,100 people started apprenticeships, just 400 fewer than in the same time period in 2018/19.

At the height of the pandemic figures dropped to 46,700 between August 2020 and January 2021.

Under-19s now make up more than a quarter of new apprentices to have taken up posts since August 2021, while 19- to 24-year-olds account for just over a third of new starters.
