The figures look at the number of apprentices starting during between August and October over the last three years.

This found that the number of under 19-year olds starting apprenticeships dipped markedly between 2019 and 2020, during the first year of the pandemic, from 40,700 to 23,800.

But while the numbers increased during 2021, to 40,100, they are the only age group still below pre-pandemic levels.

In contrast, the number of 19- to 24-year-olds apprentices starting their training increased from 36,800 to 40,300 between August and October 2019 and the same period in 2021.

Over the same timeframe, apprenticeship starts for over 25s increased from 48,300 to 49,800.
