Young people's views on transport violence to influence policing

Research carried out by young people into perceptions of youth violence on London's transport networks is set to influence policing in the capital, a senior figure in the Metropolitan Police has said.

A study carried out predominantly by young people for think-tank Independent Academic Research Studies (IARS), revealed a range of issues, including a false perception from some people, particularly adults, who think youth crime on London transport is more prevalent than it is.

It also highlighted fears among young people around using transport in London and at bus and underground stations.

Fieldwork for the investigation was carried out at Elephant and Castle and in West Croydon with the support of the Metropolitan Police.

Stakeholders and young people were interviewed and young people responded to questionnaires, with all fieldwork conducted by members of the youth advisory board, set-up by the now defunct London Serious Youth Violence Board.
