Young people link up with police to tackle crime

Young people and the police have joined forces to come up with new approaches to dealing with youth crime in a London borough.

Youth Parliament members Chikira Smith-Richards and Josiephine Durley put together a report on youth crime in Hammersmith and Fulham after interviewing 600 young people, before presenting their finding to the borough council.

The report focuses on crime hotspots in the borough for the theft of personal property.

“After a review of the evidence and exploration of what is being done to tackle personal theft from young people, we give our recommendations on what we think could additionally be done within our borough, and in the London region, to try and tackle this issue,” the report states.

The report found that a quarter of young people did not feel safe and had fears about being robbed or caught up in fights and that young people are more likely to be targeted at four hotspots between 3pm and 6pm during the week and 6pm and 9pm on weekends – and presented their findings to a council committee on 11 April.
