Young people in secure settings asked about crime and safety

Young people with psychiatric illnesses have taken part in workshops to find out their views on crime and staying safe.

The 13- to 18-year-olds from Cloughside College in Manchester were taking part in the NCB Healthier Inside programme, which aims to improve the health and well-being of young people in secure settings.

The young people said they did not feel safe walking around their streets and neighbourhoods and were afraid of other young people. They felt that neither police, teachers nor the government could protect them from crime.

Baljinder Heer, senior development officer at NCB, said: ‘If we want to create safer and healthier communities, young people need to be supported to have their voices heard and to be involved in the making of decisions that affect their lives."
