Young people drink to relieve boredom

Young people are turning to alcohol to relieve boredom, a survey of 16- and 17-year-olds has revealed.

The online survey of more than 1,000 young people by Drinkaware revealed eight per cent of young people drank every week to relieve boredom and almost a third had consumed alcohol when bored.

Summer holidays were a source of boredom for more than half of the young people surveyed and more than half intend to drink alcohol during this period.

Drinkaware said young people are often bored due to a lack of events and activities in their area over the holidays or due to a lack of awareness about potential activities.

Chris Sorek, Drinkaware chief executive, said: "There are so many positive activities that young people could do with their time instead. They could volunteer, go to the cinema or play sports. They need to be aware of what is out there and parents and councillors need to make a bigger contribution to suggesting activities."
