Young offenders offer advice on reducing youth crime

2 mins read Youth Justice
Thirty young offenders from across England braved treacherous travel conditions today (2 December) to meet senior representatives from the criminal justice system in Westminster.

Organised by charity User Voice, the event provided an opportunity for current or ex-offenders to speak directly to policy makers about their experiences of the criminal justice system and explain what they would do to reduce youth crime.

Young people opened the event by presenting their experiences of criminal behaviour, drug abuse and homelessness, before breaking out into an "open space" discussion format so that everyone had the chance to be heard.

Policy makers in attendance included members of the Youth Justice Board, the Ministry of Justice, Home Office and the National Offender Management Service.

"I’ve been really impressed by these young people who are prepared to stand up, tell their stories and come up with solutions," said Heather Munro, chief executive of the London Probation Trust. "It’s so important to listen to young offenders and we don’t do enough of that in probation," she said.
