Young offender assessment system backed by ministers

Ministers have given the green light to proposals for a new assessment system for young offenders.

The Youth Justice Board, which has developed the proposals, described the government approval as an “important step”, although funding for the project, expected to cost in the region of £10m, is yet to be secured.

“The YJB continues to engage with the Cabinet Office to secure funding for the project, but this represents an important step,” a YJB statement said.

The existing Asset system, which uses a number of factors to predict the level of risk a young person poses and the support they require, has been criticised in recent years.

Those opposed to the current framework say it can lead to tougher sentences for young people from deprived backgrounds compared to those who have committed the same crime, but come from a more privileged background.
