YMCA urges MPs to show young people respect

More than 120 young people and youth leaders from YMCAs across the country are today calling on MPs to show respect to young people.

The young people want MPs to pledge to speak respectfully about young people, particularly during a general election campaign.

They are also asking the government to deliver on its promises to support education and reintegration for young offenders, to reduce the number of young people in prison and ensure custody is only used as a last resort.

YMCA England national secretary Ian Green said: "The words used both by politicians and in today's media overwhelmingly describe young people in negative, often criminal tones.

"This lobby on Parliament will allow young people from across England to meet with their local MPs to get their voices heard about issues important to them."
