
In September the Howard League for Penal Reform said young people were leaving custody without a number, making it difficult for them to get a job and resettle successfully.
In response, the Youth Justice Board (YJB) is publishing advice to young people on how to find out, or obtain, their National Insurance number.
The YJB said young people who enter custody before their 16th birthday, and leave after it, may not be aware what their National Insurance number is, even though it will have been automatically generated by HM Revenue & Customs.
Frances Crook, chief executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, said: "I am delighted that the YJB has recognised how important it is to help young people get their National Insurance number.
