More children than previously thought died under youth offending team supervision in the community last year, it has emerged.

Statistics released to CYP Now by the Youth Justice Board (YJB) had shown that there were 14 for the whole of 2010 but as a result of data recently being updated to include "deferred cases", this has now risen to 23.

Deaths of this nature, known as serious incidents in the community, can include drug overdoses, road accidents, suicides or murders.

Between 1 January and 30 April this year there have already been 13 deaths of children under YOT supervision.

In an attempt to raise awareness on the issue, the YJB has released a new package of information for youth justice practitioners, featuring advice learned from emerging national trends, Youth Justice Community Serious Incidents 2010 – Lessons Learnt.
