A total 132 young offenders have died while under supervision in the community since 2006, figures released in parliament have revealed.

Following a parliamentary question by shadow youth justice minister Andy Slaughter, statistics released by the Ministry of Justice yesterday (13 July) confirmed figures previously gathered by CYP Now showing there were 23 deaths in 2010 and 13 so far this year.

Additionally, they revealed there were 32 deaths in 2006 and 2007 combined, 32 in 2008 and 32 in 2009, bringing the total since 2006 to 132.

"This deserves closer scrutiny and we will be asking the government to explain what has happened," Slaughter said.

The issue of serious incidents involving young offenders in the community, including deaths, attempted suicides and serious offences, was first reported in October last year following an investigation by CYP Now.
