YJB extends reach of resettlement support

Help to get young offenders settled back into the community after being released from custody is to be boosted with the launch of three resettlement projects.

Consortia linking youth offending services, voluntary services and local authorities – particularly children’s services and housing departments – alongside custodial establishments, will be launched in Wales, the South East and Birmingham.

The new consortia take the total in operation up to seven, with more areas expected to sign up later in the year.

In 2009 the Youth Justice Board (YJB) funded the development of consortia in the North West, South West and Wessex, and last year one was formed in West Yorkshire.

The concept behind the consortia is that they link children and young people to extra support with training, accommodation and employment to help them lead a crime-free life on release.
