Welsh parliament rejects outright ban on smartphones in schools

The Welsh parliament has rejected calls for a ban on the use of smartphones by pupils in schools in Wales.

The Senedd’s petitions committee, which had been considering a 3,000-signature petition calling for a ban, said the case “is not a clear-cut call” and instead it prefers to see more support for schools to set their own restrictions.

Similarly in England, an outright smartphone ban in schools has not been included in Labour MP Josh MacAlister’s safer phones private members bill, with Parliamentary debate adjourned until 11 July.

While the MP had originally suggested outlawing smartphones in schools, the bill now favours giving parents greater guidance on device use and calls for further research into the impact of social media on children.
