During a meeting in Westminster with Josh MacAlister MP, who is behind the Safer Phones Bill and preparing for its second reading in Parliament, young people asked that lawmakers consider that smartphone use and access to social media is "now an integral part" of their lives.
Measures under consideration by MacAlister, who led the independent review into children’s social care before he entered parliament last year, include raising the digital age of consent from 13 to 16.
Young people aged between 13 and 17 made the comments during a meeting this week arranged by children’s charities including the NSPCC, Barnardo’s, Action for Children, The Children’s Society and the National Children’s Bureau.
