A young offender institution where more than 30 weapons were found during a single search has been blasted for high levels of violence.

An inspection of Cookham Wood YOI in Kent found that during the six months before the inspection, which took place in June, 169 acts of violence had been recorded compared with 130 at the previous inspection last year.

"Some incidents were very serious and involved gangs of boys attacking a single boy," the report states.

It adds that during a recent "lockdown search", a total of 35 home-made weapons were found and more than one in four (28 per cent) of the mainstream population of 15- to 18-year-olds were on some form of necessary restriction.

"Serious injuries following fights and assaults were not uncommon," the report states.
