A study published by Nuffield Family Justice Observatory has revealed that children in need of secure accommodation are being transferred an average of 353 miles away from their homes when places cannot be found for them locally.

At any one time, there are 25 children from England and Wales residing in Scottish SCHs.

Based on a collection of data from 2018 and 2019 by the Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice at the University of Strathclyde, the study focuses on 59 out of the 165 children from England and Wales put into SCHs in Scotland – more than a third of all children within Scottish secure homes.
