'Wanted' poster of teenager sparks children's rights fears

1 min read Youth Justice
A children's rights group has raised concerns after Greater Manchester Police took the unusual step of picturing a 16-year-old murder suspect on a billboard.

A "wanted for murder" poster has been erected in Manchester City Centre, featuring Moses Mathias, who is wanted in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Giuseppe Gregory.

But Katy Swaine, legal director at the Children's Rights Alliance for England, fears the measure threatens children's rights.

She said: "Putting up this billboard with picture and name clearly contravenes his right to privacy. Legally the police must show this was a proportionate and necessary step.

"There is no suggestion of innocence until proven guilty in the way the poster is worded, raising concern over whether there could be a fair trial."
