Children's Rights Bill introduced

Baroness Joan Walmsley has introduced a Children's Rights Bill, which would make the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child part of UK law.

The private members’ bill had its first reading in the House of Lords yesterday. The second reading, when the bill will be debated, has yet to be scheduled.

The bill has been drafted with the support of the Rights of the Child UK coalition (Rock) whose members include the Children's Rights Alliance for England, the National Youth Agency, NCB, NSPCC and Save the Children UK.

Katy Swaine, chair of the Rock coalition, said: "We call on Parliament to pass the bill and give all children, whatever their setting or circumstances, an effective remedy for violations of the rights that belong to them."
