Vulnerable children could lose out as free school 'jumps queue', claims NUT

1 min read Education
The National Union of Teachers (NUT) has hit out at Hammersmith & Fulham Council over plans to allow a free school to temporarily take over a site earmarked for a special school.

Cambridge Special School in Hammersmith, which is rated outstanding by Ofsted, is housed in an outdated building. It is set to be relocated to the site of a former adult education centre, the Bryony Centre in White City.

This site has been earmarked so the special school will be near neighbouring Phoenix High School and other local schools and children’s centres.

But the council is considering allowing the West London Free School – championed by journalist Toby Young – to use the Bryony Centre as a temporary home.

After two years, the free school is expected to leave the centre and move to a building that is currently occupied by Palingswick House community centre, although no final decision has been made.
