Union pushes for withdrawal of teaching code of conduct

1 min read Education
Teachers' union NASUWT is campaigning for the withdrawal of a teaching code of practice set to be implemented next month.

The union says it is "deeply concerned" about the General Teaching Council for England's Code of Conduct and Practice.

It has distributed posters to all schools asking teachers to sign its online petition against the code, which has already been signed by 10,000 people. The union also intends to distribute postcards at conferences and events encouraging people to sign the petition.

Chris Keates, general secretary of NASUWT, said: "The code is unnecessarily long, littered with pious statements, conflicts with contractual provisions and intrudes into private lives.

"Teachers and headteachers must of course behave in a professional manner, but the code has unreasonable expectations about how they should conduct themselves."
