Secretary of State for Justice Robert Buckland issued an urgent notice of improvement concerning Rainsbrook in December after inspectors found that new arrivals were being kept in cells for as long as 23 and a half hours a day.

MTC’s contract to run Rainsbrook was due to end in May, however, it has now emerged that the company and the Ministry of Justice have agreed to invoke a two-year extension which allows the contract to run until May 2023.

“The contract with MTC was originally awarded on a five-year term with an expiry date of May 2021, with the option for a two-year extension. This was invoked in February 2020 and the contract will now expire in May 2023,” an MoJ spokesman confirmed.
