The Justice Committee has asked the Ministry of Justice to explain why the extension to the contract with MTC was granted “despite long-tern concerns about its performance”.

The previous contract with MTC was due to run out this year but has been extended until May 2023.

The committee heard evidence that concerns at the facility predated the decision in 2019 to extend the contract, despite government claims that there were no concerns ahead of this move.

Last week, all children were removed from Rainsbrook after safety fears were raised at recent inspections, including visits at the end of 2020 and early this year.
