Tri-borough councils set to recruit volunteers to boost early years services

1 min read Early Years
Local residents are to be recruited across three London boroughs to help parents before and after the birth of their children as part of a new scheme.

The Maternity Champions initiative, being launched across the tri-borough children's services arrangement of Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, and Westminster, will see volunteers in areas of high need receive accredited training and support to improve the health and wellbeing of ante- and post-natal parents, and children up to one-year-old.

The authorities plan to launch the four-year strategy in August, with the aim of reducing health and social inequalities by focusing on employment, health improvement, social cohesion, children's school readiness, and improving locals' knowledge of and access to local services.

The decision follows the success of a smaller, two-year pilot project, which an independent social return on investment assessment from 2014 found delivered £5 worth of value for every £1 invested for health and care services as a result of improved health and wellbeing.
