Transport: Backlash over call to raise driving age

Calls to raise the driving age to 18 were slammed this week by youth campaigners, who say it will have a devastating affect on young people in rural areas.

The National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs says the move, proposed last week by the Transport Select Committee, would heighten young people's social and economic isolation.

The federation's chief executive James Eckley said: "This will seriously hamper their opportunities relating to economic wellbeing, in terms of getting to work placements, and vocational courses, which goes against the Every Child Matters agenda."

Bud Simpkin of Young Suffolk, a network of voluntary and youth groups in the county, also opposes the move. "Young people in rural areas need to be able to drive to meet friends as well as get to courses and work," he said.
