Top colleges could have fewer inspections

Education
High performing colleges and work-based learning providers could have up to six years between inspections under plans released by Ofsted yesterday.

The consultation document proposes that Ofsted focus inspections on weak or new providers, with satisfactory providers receiving inspections every four years, and high performers less frequently.

Other proposals include a focus on whether the college, nextstep provider or work-based learning provider offers value for money, and the possible introduction of "no notice" inspections.

The new approach will be piloted next year. The consultation is open until 25 January 2009.
