Announcing her resignation on Twitter, Tolhurst wrote: “It’s been a privilege to serve as minister for schools and childhood.
“I have decided that now more than ever, with the challenges we face I want to focus on supporting and helping the people of Rochester and Strood, representing my constituents and businesses from the backbenches.”
Tolhurst was appointed to the role, which encompassed responsibilities previously held by the children’s minister and schools minister roles, on 27 September.
She became the seventh person to hold the portfolio for children since 2010.
Her replacement has not yet been announced but it comes after Robert Halfon, who has been chair of the education select committee since July 2017, and former schools minister Nick Gibb returned to the Department for Education yesterday (27 October).
