A three-year funding package of as much as £15 billion is needed to support the government’s education catch-up plan in England, new research suggests.

Analysis released by the Education Policy Institute (EPI) shows that a multi-year investment of between £10bn and £15bn is required to meet the Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s pledge to make up for the lost learning seen by pupils as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Johnson has previously vowed that “no child will be left behind as a result of the learning they have lost over the past year” and that the government will also “plug the gaps in education”.

However, education recovery tsar Sir Kevan Collins is among critics to brand short-term funding of £1.7bn to support pupils “insufficient”.
