Teenager takes control of 500m children's services budget for a day

1 min read Youth Work
A teenager has taken on the daunting task of running three councils' children's services departments and controlling a 500m budget, as part of the children's commissioner's Takeover Day.

The annual event sees young people across the country take control of a wide range of adults' jobs from teachers and local councillors to museum curators.

Fifteen-year-old Klaus Visha stepped into Andrew Christie’s shoes as director of children’s services for the tri-borough arrangement between Hammersmith & Fulham, Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea.

Klaus was among a group of teenagers in the three boroughs who shadowed officers in various departments, including environmental health, finance and community safety.

Klaus, who attends the Bridge Academy in Fulham, said: "I want to see how unfortunate children and families get the help they need and would like to see how Andrew has an input into this. This is also an opportunity to see if my views on how children’s services could be improved will be taken seriously and to find out ways to make my suggestions happen."
