Teenager dies at Cookham Wood YOI

A teenager has died at a young offender institution in Kent.

Caden Steward, 16, was on remand at Cookham Wood YOI in Borstal, Rochester.

The death, which is being treated as non-suspicious, is to be investigated by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "HMYOI Cookham Wood young offender Caden Steward died on 27 June 2019 and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

"As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."

Steward is the third child to die at Cookham Wood YOI, which holds 165 boys, since 2012.

The YOI is one of four establishments that the Ministry of Justice commissions from Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service to provide specialist custodial places for young people aged 15 to 18.
