Teenage pregnancy strategy: No extra money for local authorities

1 min read
Beverley Hughes has said there will be no new money to help councils drive down teenage pregnancy rates.

The children's minister launched an updated version of the teenagepregnancy strategy last week. The strategy says that the progress of allauthorities will be monitored and that badly performing councils willface intervention.

But the minister made it clear that no extra cash would be madeavailable to help struggling councils to improve.

She told Children Now: "By and large, it's not demanding a lot ofresources to do better in many areas, it's demanding a much more focusedapproach so the services that are there anyway can be brought to bear ina much more targeted way. It's not about additional resources, it'sabout using the resources they've got in a much more focused way tobring the rates down."
