Teenage Pregnancy Strategy: Beyond 2010

1 min read Health
Since the launch of the government's Teenage Pregnancy Strategy in 1999, the number of births to young women under 18 has reduced by almost 25 per cent. In order to help reach its initial target of halving teenage pregnancy rates, the Department for Children, Schools and Families has launched the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy: Beyond 2010.

This consultation looks at how delivery of the teenage pregnancy strategy will be strengthened, and how it will provide support and improve outcomes for teenage parents and their children. The consultation document sets out the results of the government's strategy so far, and looks at how all universal and targeted services for young people have a role to play in preventing teenage pregnancies. It also looks at how central government can support local areas to reduce teenage pregnancy rates by using best practice from areas that have seen the most success.

The 2010 strategy aims to give young people the information and advice they need to make informed decisions about having sex, and ensure they understand how to access effective contraception. It is based on more open and honest discussions with young people and their parents, and supporting professionals. The consultation results are expected in July 2010, and a separate consultation for young people and parents will be launched shortly through sexual health charity Brook and Parentline Plus.
