The survey by early years charitable foundation Kindred2 found 49% of teachers said the school readiness of the 2024 reception cohort of children had deteriorated, while a third said the problem was about the same.

Around a third of teachers reported children starting reception unable to listen or respond to simple instruction, 36% struggling to play and share, and a quarter being unable to use the toilet.

Researchers calculated that the time teachers spent dealing with school-readiness related issues equated to 2.4 hours of lost teaching time every day.
