School readiness: the power of words

A recent survey of primary school teachers in England and Wales found that more and more staff felt that increasing numbers of children weren’t ‘ready’ for school.

This is a worrying development on several levels, and we must do all we can to move away from the potentially harmful and dangerous language such as that of describing children as “not ready”.

Instead of viewing children dismissively as “not ready”, we should focus on what can be done to fully support them and ensure there is meaningful support in line with their individual and diverse needs. Compassion is key. Without this, we risk a blame game and alienating families and their children who are most in need.
