Tailored support programme for excluded pupils unveiled by Catch22

1 min read Education Youth Justice
Catch22 is launching an alternative education programme aimed at improving the lives of excluded pupils and diverting them away from crime.

Called Engage in Education, the programme is backed by the Department for Education and offers tailored support such as community mentors and specialist teaching.

The initiative will target young people who have been excluded and are being taught outside of mainstream schools.

The project will take place in Bristol, Croydon, Harlow, Newcastle and Greater Manchester and also involves Rathbone, I Can, PPP and Dyslexia Action.

It follows a Catch22-run pilot called Engage, which took place in eight London boroughs.

Around 135,000 young people are taught in alternative education centres after being excluded. This group is blighted by poor school attainment and job prospects, leaving them at risk of criminal activity.
