Swine flu forces school closure

A school in Devon has become the first in the UK to close because of swine flu.

Paignton Community College in Torbay has been closed for seven days after a pupil was found to have contracted the virus, Health Secretary Alan Johnson revealed.

The 12-year-old girl was on the same flight from Mexico as Scottish couple Iain and Dawn Askham, the first confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK.

All 230 pupils in her year have been given anti-viral drugs.

The Local Government Association's latest briefing for councils reiterated government advice to schools and children's centres to "carry on as normal".

"It is usually the responsibility of headteachers to decide whether or not to close a school, taking into account the Department for Children Schools and Families guidance about what to do in the event of a pandemic," said the document.
