Survey explores rise in child remand in London

A new survey has been launched over a rise in the number of children on remand in London.

The questionaire, by charity Transform Justice and the London Children in Custody working group, aims to gather evidence on recent cases and decision-making to understand why remand is rising in the capital.

It also questions high levels of BAME (black, asian or minority ethnic) children remanded in the capital.

“Ninety per cent of children remanded in London between February and April 2020 were black, asian or minority ethnic and two thirds were black/black British,” Transform Justice states.

It adds that a high proportion of these children are “are charged with possession [of drugs] with intent to supply”.
