Most children held on remand do not receive custodial sentences, figures show

Some 74 per cent of young people remanded in custody in the year to March 2021 were not sentenced to time in the youth secure estate, according to a report published by the Ministry of Justice and the Youth Justice Board (YJB).

Half of those who did not receive custodial sentences, around 300 children, were acquitted.

Keith Fraser, chair of the YJB, said that this means many young people are in custody “unnecessarily” and are “experiencing the trauma and stigma that brings”.  

“This is damaging to children, their relationships, their opportunities and identity, which does not improve public safety,” he said.
