Surrey children's services upgraded to 'good'

Surrey children’s services leaders and staff have received glowing praise from Ofsted after turning around a history of poor ratings.

Now rated ‘good’, the department endured six years with the lowest 'inadequate' rating until 2022, when it received ‘requires improvement’.

A report published this month following a March inspection, found that most children and families in Surrey now receive the help, protection and care that they need, having “improved substantially” since the last inspection.

“These improvements to practice have been achieved through skilled leadership, strong political and corporate support, and well-trained and committed staff.

“Senior leaders’ ambition for children permeates throughout the organisation and they have successfully improved consistency of practice across all parts of the county.”

During an interview with BBC Radio Surrey about the turnaround Clare Curren, Surrey’s cabinet member for children, families and lifelong learning, made reference to the murder case of 10-year-old Sara Sharif, who was found dead at her family home in Woking, Surrey, on 10 August 2023.
