Sure Starts need poverty training

Children's centre workers should be given training on the impact of poverty and disadvantage on family life to help achieve Sure Start's goals.

A report, published today (19 September) by research organisation Capacity, is the latest to address whether or not Sure Start is achieving its goals and argues there are many examples of good practice showing the impact good children's centres can have on people's lives. It argues more financial help is needed to ensure children's centres don't concentrate on attracting middle-class families who are able to pay for services.

The report also says that in order to reduce poverty Sure Start needs to be linked to other anti-poverty measures, such as employment and training schemes, and have better links with Jobcentre Plus.

Margaret Lochrie, director of Capacity, said: "The children's centre initiative needs to be linked more effectively to other anti-poverty measures - without this it may fail to deliver its policy goals."
