Sunak’s New Year speech slammed over 'missing key priorities' for children

Social work and early years leaders have criticised the Prime Minister’s New Year speech, saying he failed to address several key priorities for children and young people.

Sunak addressed the nation on Wednesday afternoon to outline government priorities for the year ahead, including a desire to “reimagine our approach to numeracy” by ensuring school pupils study maths up until the age of 18.

Both education and family were frequently cited in the Prime Minister’s speech, which stated: “Family runs right through our vision of a better future.”

However, Sunak has faced criticism from experts who claim he omitted several key priorities for children from this vision, including the challenges facing the early years and social work sectors.

Katharine Sacks-Jones, chief executive of children’s care charity Become, said: “It’s extremely disappointing that children’s social care continues to be overlooked by our government when the crisis is crystal clear: we have an overwhelmed care system with record numbers of children in care, and far too many children face further trauma as they experience instability while in the system, the care cliff once they’re made to leave, and stigma throughout their lives.
