StreetGames to ramp up youth sports clubs scheme

A £3.38m programme that will see 307 youth sports clubs established across England has been launched by StreetGames.

The move will see the youth sports charity expand its Doorstep Sport Clubs programme, which offers 14-to 25-year-olds free or low-cost access to clubs offering a wide range of traditional and alternative sports.

StreetGames aims to work with local authorities, youth groups, charities and sports clubs to set up 307 clubs in the most deprived areas of the country by summer 2014.

Jane Ashworth, chief executive of StreetGames, said: “This is not just about sport; it’s also about improving young peoples’ lives as they grow and develop as members of healthier, safer, stronger communities.

“Over the last seven years we and our local network of partners have already brought sport close to the home in more than 200 disadvantaged UK communities at the right time, for the right price and in the right style.

“Now our ambition is to have a positive impact on even more young peoples’ lives and we’re delighted Sport England have backed the expansion of our work.”

The money provided by Sport England is part of its London 2012 legacy work, which is funded by money from the National Lottery.

The Doorstep Sport Clubs have already been trialled in 40 locations, including Bristol and Hull, and offer a mix of standard sports such as football and boxing and adapted versions of games such as Cardio Tennis and Rush Hockey.
