Standards slip at Hassockfield secure training centre

An improvement plan has been developed for a secure training centre (STC) in Durham after inspectors found standards had slipped from good to satisfactory.

Ofsted inspectors found that Hassockfield STC, managed by private firm Serco, possesses clear child-centred values, provides good education and supports the mental, physical and emotional needs of the young people there.

However, concerns were raised that some staff do not fully understand the need to maintain professional boundaries between themselves and the young people.

Meanwhile, some staff are uncertain about how to manage disruptive behaviour.

The previous four inspections rated the centre, which caters for 58 children and young people aged 12 to 17, as good.
