Ofsted’s annual fostering statistics show there has been just a three per cent rise in capacity between March 2019 and March 2020, adding to concerns about the difficulty in finding suitable care for the most vulnerable children in an over-stretched system.

Meanwhile, there has been a 13 per cent decrease in available placements for children in the same time period, figures show.

While there continues to be interest in becoming a foster carer, and enquiries from prospective carers have gone up, the figures show a 10 per cent decrease in applications since March last year.
