Emma Tregear, who has helped assess applications for cash from the Children’s Play programme, said people think large charities have the edge over small voluntary groups when seeking funds because of their dedicated fundraising teams. But, she said, the small groups are often more effective fundraisers.
The small community groups are so reliant on lottery funding that they are the ones that make a huge amount of effort and do a lot of consultation and planning, she said. I’ve found the bigger charities that seek funding on a continual basis are the ones that just seem to rush the application form and don’t think really think about what the funding programme is for because they are constantly on that treadmill of seeking funding.
