Six social workers sacked as Birmingham overhauls children's services

1 min read Social Care
Birmingham City Council has sacked six social workers for failing to do their jobs properly, as part of attempts to improve the authority's troubled children's services department.

The council, which performed poorly in its most recent Ofsted inspection, was served with an improvement notice from government last year.

Les Lawrence, lead member for children and young people in the area, told CYPNow that the sackings result from an ongoing review of every social worker employed by the council.

"We have been going through a very clear process, assessing social workers’ qualifications and competencies, to make sure they can meet the standards we are setting ourselves as part of our remodelling," he explained.

With the council's review of social work employees not set to be complete until later this year, Lawrence failed to rule out the possibility of further sackings.
