Sibling carers face a battle for support

Young people who care for younger siblings face a battle to get support from councils and other agencies, a report has found.

For its Big Bruv, Little Sis report, the Family Rights Group spoke to young people who are raising their younger brothers or sisters to prevent them going in to the care system, through a series of interviews and questionnaires.

It revealed that many carers said they struggle to get the support they need and some sibling carers felt that their youth meant their voice was even less likely to be heard.

Cathy Ashley, chief executive of the Family Rights Group, said: "If the way we judge our society is how it treats its most vulnerable, then it is clear that too often we're failing those who most need our help. The research cites example after example of social care services making these young people's situation so much harder than it need have been, rather than giving them the support they so desperately need.
