According to the research, 105,286 child sexual abuse offences were recorded in 2022/23, up by two per cent on the previous year.

The number of defendants in child sexual abuse offences has also increased, by six per cent to 8,024 people in the 12 months to December 2022.

But despite this increase the number of child protection plans put in place due to sexual abuse has dropped and is now at its lowest level in 14 years.

The official figures have been analysed by the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse (CSA), which found only 2,290 children were being supported by specific plans to protect them from sexual abuse.
