
Recorded offences and reports of concerns of sexual abuse during 2021/22 were up 15 per cent on the previous year. Meanwhile, there was a 13 per cent rise in contact with sexual assault referral centres by children.
Amid this rise the legal system is blighted by delays in dealing with cases, according to the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse (CSA Centre), which has released the figures this week. It also warns that many young victims are struggling to access support.
The typical wait, from an offence being reported to a court case concluding, is just under two years (614 days).
