The plan is designed to tackle increasing levels of tooth decay among children aged between three and five by monitoring toothbrushing in schools.

It was revealed as part of Starmer’s first policy announcements ahead of the annual party conference in Liverpool which began on Sunday (8 October), as he pledged to spend £111 million a year to solve the “dental crisis” in England if his party win the next general election.

The announcement has sparked a mixed reaction among education and dental professionals with most supporting the programme as long as it is fully funded by the next government.

Director of policy and communications at the National Day Nurseries Association, Jonathan Broadbery, said: “Moves to support young children’s dental health are very welcome as healthy habits formed in a child’s early years can make a difference that lasts a lifetime. However, for early years settings to keep making a difference to children’s development, learning and health and well-being, early education and care needs to be properly funded by any government.”
